06:47 pm - The Spoon Theory

This came to me via the listserv for my favorite science-fiction convention:

It really made an impression on me, perhaps in part because I'm gearing up emotionally for a memorial service tomoro for a vibrant woman lost to breast cancer at age 43. I only had a chance to work with her for a few months before the recurrence of her cancer forced her to quit her job and prepare for the end. She leaves behind a husband and 2 small children. I cannot begin to imagine what they're going thru, but the above article gave me a glimmering.

Every second is precious. We each choose how we will spend ours.

07:41 pm - Logic of Science vs. Religion

I was tipped off to Kurt Williamsen’s article by a link to it posted on the listserv of Atheists and Agnostics of Wisconsin. After I followed the link and read the column, I knew I would burst if I didn’t write a letter to the editor in response. My main problem was trying to figure out which of the many, many possible targets to aim for.

The Appleton Post-Crescent, like most newspapers, has a length limit on letters to the editor. Theirs is, in fact, a tad more generous than most at 300 words. Still, a portion of those would inevitably be taken up identifying the original essay and quoting the part that I was responding to. And there wouldn’t be much room in the remaining words to go into lengthy explanations or chains of reasoning.

So I had to pick out what I thot were the most egregious flaws in the original. I decided to concentrate on his weird obsession with certainty, as if that’s the way science was actually supposed to work.

So that became the subject of my letter to the editor. It's hiding here. )

Tomoro: A huge new vista opens up, as I’m made aware of the on-line forum where people can respond to the original column at length.
